Types of ration cards in India
Ration cards in India are issued based on the economic status of a household and determine the quantity and type of subsidised goods available under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
- APL (Above Poverty Line) โ Issued to families whose annual income exceeds the poverty line. Cardholders receive subsidised grains at slightly higher rates.
- BPL (Below Poverty Line) โ Issued to families living below the poverty line. Cardholders receive higher subsidies on wheat, rice, and other essential commodities.
- AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) โ Issued to the poorest of the poor โ families with no stable income. Cardholders receive the highest subsidy under the National Food Security Act.
- State-specific cards โ Some states issue additional categories such as priority household (PHH) cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
