How to Renew Your Driving Licence in India

1 February 2025 | 4 min read | Updated 1 May 2025

A driving licence is valid for 20 years from the date of issue, or until you turn 50, whichever comes first. After that it must be renewed. You can renew your driving licence online via the Parivahan Seva portal from anywhere in India. This guide covers the full renewal process, the grace period, documents needed, and fees.

When should you renew your driving licence?

You can apply for renewal up to 1 year before your licence expiry date. After expiry, a grace period of 30 days applies — you can renew during this window without any late fee.

After the 30-day grace period, a late fee applies. Driving with an expired licence is a traffic offence and can result in penalties.

Licences of drivers aged 50 and above are typically valid for only 5 years and must be renewed more frequently.

Documents required for DL renewal

You will typically need the following:

Original driving licence — The existing licence that is due for renewal.
Aadhaar card — For identity and address verification.
Passport-size photograph — A recent photograph with a white or light background.
Medical certificate (Form 1A) — Required for applicants aged 40 and above in most states, or as specified by state rules.

How long does DL renewal take?

After a successful application and payment, the renewed driving licence is typically dispatched within 7 to 15 business days.

Your renewed DL is sent by India Speed Post to the registered address. You can track dispatch status using your application number on the Parivahan Seva portal.

Renewing offline at the RTO

If you prefer the in-person process, submit Form LLD (Application for Renewal of DL) along with your documents and fee at the RTO counter.

Some states require an in-person visit regardless — for example, for a biometric update or driving test. Your state's RTO portal will indicate whether an appointment is needed.
