GST registration is mandatory for businesses whose annual turnover crosses the prescribed threshold. Once registered, you receive a GSTIN (GST Identification Number) — a 15-digit number that identifies your business in the GST system. This guide explains who needs to register, what documents are required, and how to complete the online registration on the GST portal.

Who needs to register for GST?

GST registration is mandatory for:

Businesses with turnover above the threshold — ₹40 lakh per year for goods suppliers (₹20 lakh for service providers; ₹10 lakh in special category states like North-East and hill states).
Inter-state suppliers — Any business supplying goods or services across state borders must register, regardless of turnover.
E-commerce sellers — Anyone selling through an e-commerce platform (Amazon, Flipkart, etc.) must register for GST, regardless of turnover.
Casual and non-resident taxable persons — Those who supply goods/services occasionally or from outside India must register before starting operations.
Reverse charge recipients — Businesses that pay GST under the reverse charge mechanism must be registered.

Documents required for GST registration

Prepare the following before starting your application:

PAN card — PAN of the business entity (or proprietor for sole proprietorships).
Aadhaar card — Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners, or directors as applicable.
Proof of business address — Electricity bill, water bill, property tax receipt, or rent/lease agreement for the registered business address.
Bank account details — A cancelled cheque or bank statement showing your account number and IFSC code.
Passport-size photograph — A recent photograph of the proprietor, partners, or directors.
Constitution documents — Partnership deed (for partnerships), Certificate of Incorporation (for companies and LLPs), or relevant registration certificate.
